In detail

How it works, in detail

French training in Quebec is bought for two reasons that rarely arrive together: a compliance deadline, and a team that genuinely cannot serve customers in French. Conversaflex covers both — unlimited spoken practice per employee, and the participation and level records an OQLF file needs.

What is business French training for employees?

Business French training for employees is workplace French that an employer funds so staff can do their jobs in French — serve a customer, run a shift handover, write a report the OQLF would accept. In Quebec it is also a legal matter: businesses with 25 or more employees must register with the Office québécois de la langue française and work towards a francisation certificate, and training is how most of them get there.

What Bill 96 actually asks of an employer

The obligation is not that every employee speaks perfect French. It is that French is the normal language of work, and that you can show what you did about it. Most of the anxiety around Bill 96 comes from confusing the two.

  • Businesses with 25 or more employees must register with the OQLF and pursue a francisation certificate
  • You are assessed on the generalised use of French across the organisation, not on individual test scores
  • An analysis of the language situation, a francisation programme where one is required, and evidence of follow-through
  • Records matter as much as results: who trained, for how long, and what changed
  • Penalties escalate with time, so a documented programme in progress is worth far more than a good intention

Quebec levels 1–12, and how they map to the CEFR

Quebec uses its own twelve-point francisation scale where most of the world uses the six CEFR bands, and the two do not divide evenly. Employers get caught out when a supplier reports CEFR levels against a requirement written in Quebec levels.

  • Levels 1–4 are beginner territory, roughly CEFR A1 to A2
  • Levels 5–8 cover the functional middle, roughly A2 to B1, which is where most workplace requirements sit
  • Levels 9–12 are B2 and above, the range for client-facing and supervisory roles
  • Conversaflex places each employee on the CEFR scale and reports against both, so a francisation file and an internal dashboard agree

Why speaking is the part that stalls

Most employees in Quebec read French better than they speak it. They understand the memo and freeze in the meeting. Classroom hours do not fix that efficiently, because a group of eight gives each person a few minutes of speech an hour — and speech is the thing being avoided.

  • Unlimited one-to-one speaking practice, at whatever hour the shift allows
  • Quebec French specifically, not Parisian French, including the vocabulary a customer will actually use
  • Real-time pronunciation feedback, which is the part learners cannot self-correct
  • Low-stakes repetition: the AI does not sigh, and nobody's colleague is watching

Funding it, and what to report

Quebec employers above the payroll threshold already have to spend 1% on workforce training under Bill 90. Language training qualifies, which means for many organisations the francisation budget already exists.

  • Bill 90 training-levy eligibility, so the spend is often already committed
  • Participation, practice time and level movement exportable per employee and per team
  • Learner records held in a Canada-resident database, with scheduled processing in Montreal
  • A Montreal team, in French, when the OQLF file needs to make sense to someone locally

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Conversaflex and how can it help my team learn French for work?

Conversaflex is an AI language-practice platform for organizations. Employees practise realistic workplace conversations in French, get explanations and feedback, and admins can follow engagement and progress.

Can Conversaflex adapt to each learner's level and role?

Yes. Practice can be adjusted to the learner's level, objectives, role, and professional context, so a receptionist, manager, sales rep, or technical employee can practise more relevant language.

Does Conversaflex replace a teacher or corporate language program?

No. Conversaflex is designed to complement language training by giving employees more speaking practice between classes and by giving managers better visibility into engagement.

Is French practice useful for Bill 96 and OQLF readiness?

Conversaflex supports workplace French confidence and can help teams practise role-specific communication. It is not legal advice, but it gives HR and L&D teams a practical way to support francization efforts.

Does Conversaflex satisfy Bill 96 requirements on its own?

No tool satisfies Bill 96 on its own — the obligation is organisational, covering signage, documents, software and communications as well as staff language. What Conversaflex provides is the training half and the evidence: who practised, for how long, and how their level moved, exportable for a francisation file. Pair it with the rest of your language policy.

Do you teach Quebec French or European French?

Quebec French, for workplace use. That matters more than it sounds: the vocabulary, the register and the pronunciation differ, and an employee trained on European French still hesitates when a customer in Trois-Rivières speaks normally.

How does this map to the Quebec francisation scale?

Placement is on the CEFR scale (A1–C2) and reporting shows both, because most Quebec requirements are written in the 1–12 scale while most platforms report CEFR. Levels 5–8 correspond roughly to A2–B1, which is where a large share of workplace requirements land.

What if employees are at completely different levels?

That is the normal case, and it is the main argument against a single classroom cohort. Practice adapts per learner, so a level 3 and a level 9 on the same team progress on their own path from the same account, and the dashboard shows both.
